Sports Photography:PK Subban Hockey Practice Drills
Bring your A-Game for this style of photography. Especially if your task is shooting the PK Subban hockey practice drills. Also bring a lot of money for photography equipment needed to shoot sports. Smartphones need not apply.
Though I haven’t shot a lot of sports, the shoots I’ve had, I enjoyed immensely. Over the years I’ve shot Boxing, Martial Arts, WWF Wrestling, INDY Car Racing, and over the past two summers, elite level hockey players.
I've been shooting for a Dusan ( Deuce ) Kralic . Deuce trains OHL / AHL / NHL / Olympian level players. Both men & woman teams.
What he needs from me, is to photograph the players as they go through their training drills. Later he reviews the images, looking at techniques being used by the players, and whether or not some adjustments need to be made. Over the last two years, I’ve exposed two OHL players that were shooting on the goalie with their eyes shut. It made perfect sense why they weren’t scoring. Adjustments have since been made.
Deuce has been training Montreal Canadians PK Subban since he was 8 yrs old. Here I have a picture I took of PK going through a drill.
A number of challenges came up. First one. PK is lightening fast. To capture a crisp shot of him you need to have a fast shutter speed. Fast shutter speed means I had to make up for the loss of light, yet maintain a clean image.
Another challenge is all the white in the shot. Ice, boards, and jersey. For the shot to look good, there would have to be detail in the white.
And the final challenge, as PK is a man of colour, it was going to be hard to balance the exposure of both him and the white.

In this shot you can see the detail in the white, PK’s face is visible behind the visor, and the shot is frozen to show the puck control, skating control, and his eyes are looking away from his stick and puck.
The three of us, are very happy with the results.
